Suriya unleashes a ‘god mode’ performance in R.J. Balaji’s latest directorial venture, *Karuppu*, a film that plunges headfirst into the murky waters of unethical practices prevalent in our judiciary.
Suriya, embodying the guardian deity—alternately Vetaikara Karuppu and Kavalkara Karuppu—commands a formidable screen presence that is truly captivating. His ‘thandavam’ (dance of fury) towards the climax sizzles with intensity. Both the styling and makeup deserve special commendation, with cinematographer Vishnu capturing Suriya at his absolute best.
Trisha Krishnan, as an honest advocate, follows Karuppu with an almost reverent admiration, forming a compelling on-screen duo. Her visible maturity lines are noteworthy, subtly reminding viewers of the embrace of natural beauty often seen in Hollywood heroines.
The courtroom sequences are exceptionally engaging, effectively shaking one’s faith in the judicial system and instilling a genuine sense of unease. Indrans and Anagha deliver captivating performances, testament to the film’s meticulously handpicked cast, which stands as a significant strength. R.J. Balaji, portraying the antagonist, delivers a credible performance, though some might find his screen time slightly excessive.
While the gripping first half smoothly transitions into a fantasy-oriented second, this shift arguably dilutes some of its initial strength. Nevertheless, the well-placed light moments and ‘mass’ sequences ensure the film remains lively and entertaining. Sai Abyankar’s contribution, particularly his ‘god mode’ feet-tapping, is memorable. However, the high-decibel background music in certain scenes could have been toned down for better impact. Vishnu’s cinematography, a true visual treat, elevates the fantasy elements to a delightful new level – kudos, Mr. Vishnu. Indeed, with its divine premise, the graphics team clearly had a field day bringing the fantastical elements to life.
Kalaivannan’s astute editing ensures sustained energy throughout the film. Karuppu is a fantasy film presented with a grounded sensibility, offering simple, sweet entertainment guaranteed. In short: KARUPPU SIRAPPU!
