About the Picture
More About the PictureMagic Mirror of the Lake, who is the fairest one of all?
I was in Finland to photograph the Northern predators. And, I was fortunate to spend several nights photographing Brown bears, a pack of Tundra wolves and the elusive Wolverine. The Finnish-Russian border is one of the longest in the world and stretches over 1300km south to north on the eastern side of Finland. It traverses through the pristine Taiga unguarded and unfenced over most parts. The buffer zone or no man’s land extends to about 3 Km on either side of the border. There is no presence of human habitation and entry to these regions are strictly controlled. Wild animals knowing no borders freely move in these parts.
The bear pauses near the edge of the water… The focus on my lens is whirring as I continue to take my shots. Then I look away from the viewfinder and watch him as he swaggers around the lake. A moment to cherish from my heart as here I was no more than 30 meters from the most majestic of the northern predators. There was nothing between us except for the flimsy wooden hide which he could flatten with a swing of his mighty paw. Bears have an acute sense of smell and he is probably aware of my presence too but as I am concealed he does not consider me a threat. He is not sure what the human is doing hidden in the tiny shed but he couldn’t care as he walks away into the woods stopping briefly to scratch his back against a young birch.
